Let's see... Tekken, Tomb Raider, Japanese anime flicks... Hey! Those are three of our favourite things. So forgive us for getting a bit nerdy and excited about Oni, a game which promises to take the very best elements of all three and mix them together in a big gameplay bowl. If Oni lives up to our expectations, we'll want to kiss it all over when it finally arrives in the dying moments of this year. We'll even lick out the inside of the packaging. Right up to the corners. Like perverts.
As with Tomb Raider, you get to play a woman, in this case an athletic slip of a thing named Konoko. She's got purple hair, just like Mrs Slocombe in Are You Being Served, but the similarity ends there. Instead of hanging around a dreary department store in the 1970s spouting pornographic innuendo about the state of her pussy, Konoko works for something called the TCTF - full title: the Techno Crimes Task Force. At which point we'll pause to enable you to crack lots of jokes about 2 Unlimited being rounded up and shot. Ho ho ho.
Done? Good. Since the bulk of the gameplay consists of Konoko running around, exploring the architecture and beating the piss out of people, let's examine those three points in turn, starting with the running around bit.Movement is controlled in much the same way as first-person shoot 'em ups like Quake, meaning that Konoko can strafe from side to side, duck and jump about. She can also slide along the floor, which is a bit of a new one.
Architecture: well, they've done something rather clever here - they actually went out and hired some proper architects to help with the level design. The result is a series of elegantly designed interiors, imposing buildings and realistic layout. All you need is a Feng Shui consultant to place the furniture and you've got the ideal environment for a combat-trousered Internet consultant from Islington to rent for ten million pounds a week, eating wood-fired poached salmon pizza while homeless children suck streaks of birdshit from the outdoor metal stairwell to survive.
Beating the piss out of people: this is the best bit. In addition to all those fancy moves we mentioned earlier, Konoko has a full complement of Tekken-style combat moves: lightning-fast punches and kicks, and of course those 'special moves' - acrobatic displays of ludicrous violence. Not that guns don't get a look in. Machine-guns, rocket launchers, you name it - the gang's all here.

Oni is a third-person fighting game that relies on the old flip-that-switch-to-flip-the-other-switch template, following the tale of Konoko as she fights corrupt conglomerates and cybernetic baddies. A back story about the character's origins, not to mention some unsurprising twists in the narrative, only attempt to pepper the non-stop slap.
Visually the game is crisp, clear, and confidently designed. And that anime influence doesn't just extend to the look of the characters themselves. As in the movies, bedazzling effects accompany every second of combat -motion blur, slow-motion replays and great big sploshes of claret are the order of the day.
And now we've gone and run out of space. Doh! There's a lot to look forward to in Oni. A lot. We're keeping a beady one on this. Look for a longer, more ravishing feature when there's more of a game for us to play around with.
tl;dr: Use 4 characters, I used 3 and it was frustrating at level 7. Scion is likely best, but I used Shadow because it 3-shots Hillock. It'll take about 60-70 minutes /played per character to get them to 7, rotating through characters it'll probably take about 4 to 4.5 hours to get four characters to 7.
Twilight Strand seems to take about 90-100 seconds to reset, it was usually fine after about 93-94 seconds, but sometimes it was not. So I think it's some random value between 90 and 100 seconds to reset.
Hillock always gets you to level 2, there is no point in killing other monsters the very first time you clear the Twilight strand. Most people probably already know this, but it's worth pointing out.
Experience points from monsters:
Level | Drowned | Sand Spitter | Hillock |
---|---|---|---|
1 | 18 | 20 | - |
2 | 18 | 20 | 137 |
3 | 18 | 20 | 137 |
4 | 18 | 20 | 137 |
5 | 15 | 17 | 118 |
6 | 9 | 10 | 73 |
7 | 5 | 5 | 39 |
About 90% of the monsters were Drowned, with the rest being Sand Spitters (and Hillock). Most instances had 20-30 monsters in them, but sometimes there would be as few as 7, and as many as 44. (Just bind /remaining to a key and hit it when you enter the zone).
I think on average, I'd kill about 20 monsters per run, which if we figure that 17 of them were Drowned, 2 were Sand Spitters, and 1 was Hillock, then an average run at levels 2-4 would give 17*18 + 2*20 + 137 = 483 Experience. This would imply about 2.5 Strands to get from 2->3, about 4 strands to get from 3->4, about 7 Strands to get from 4->5; Then at 407 Experience per run about 12 Strands 5->6, and at 246 Experience per run, about 29 Strands from 6->7. Probably about 55 strands total per character to hit 7. I wish I had tracked the exact number, but I hadn't really thought about it until I was well into the farming process.
If we figure it's about 80 seconds per strand, then we'd estimate about 18 minutes to get to level 5, about 34 to get to level 6, and 72 to get to level 7. (If you could clear strands in 60 seconds, it'd drop to about 55 minutes /played to get to level 7).
I did this with three characters (Shadows). It was not a problem until after I hit level 7, at which point I would clear the Strand with all three characters before the first character's zone reset. If I were to do it again, I'd do it with 4 characters. It took me about 30-40 seconds to take one characters through the Strand at level 7 (Just run to hillock, see if he's got the shiny sword in his chest, leave if not). I'm not sure if you need to kill hillock for the sword to show up, I didn't not approach that part scientifically, though I kinda wish I had (by not killing him at all, and seeing if it'd come up after X runs).
I hit level 6 and level 7 with the characters according to /played at:
Character | Level 6 | Level 7 |
---|---|---|
Character #1 | 35 minutes 27 seconds | 71 minutes 16 seconds |
Character #2 | 32 minutes 4 seconds | 64 minutes 14 seconds |
Character #3 | 34 minutes 0 seconds | 69 minutes 23 seconds |
I got an Oni-Goroshi with character #2 at 74 minutes /played, and 4 hours /age.
I got another Oni-Goroshi with character #3 at 76 minutes /played and 4 hours 32 minutes /age on character #3
I stopped farming at about 1 hour 50 minutes /played (on each character) after not getting another Oni-Goroshi on any of the characters, and roughly 7 hours /age.
I didn't record the XP from Uber Hillock in my excitement of seeing him. Whoops!
I think if I were to do something like this again, I'd do it with 4 characters instead of 3, because once you hit level 7, it's very frustrating to re-enter the same zone because you didn't wait quite long enough with your 3-character rotation. I'd probably also do it as Scion for the movement speed. Though Shadows were 3-shotting regular Hillock at level 5 and 6 (with Viper Strike), which was nice.
And if I were to do this at the start of a league, I'd likely use 4 characters, and then the first one to get an Oni-Goroshi, I'd take into Lioneye's watch, and start a new level 1 character if I wanted to continue farming on the other three.
