Twelve Misunderstandings of Kin Selection - Download as PDF File (.pdf), Text File (.txt) or read online. Twelve misunderstandings of kin selection = the results of my latest bio test. A bibliography of 334 references on kin selection theory and kinship. Kin Biases in Altruism Are Not Necessarily and Entirely Dueto Kin Selection Kin biases in altruism are widespread and well known. 18 Nevertheless, it appears that in testing for the roles of kinship and reciprocity in shaping social preferences, researchers have been adopting a double standard.
I am currently taking a class on the philosophy of biology. Today we discussed Richard Dawkins' 'The Selfish Gene', and I posed a question that our professor could not answer, given the fact that he is a philosophy major and not a biologist, most likely, but maybe you guys can help me out. My question is as follows:
Would a consequence of the genecentric view that Richard Dawkins puts forward not be a high degree of interspecies altruism? My point is that alot of animals share a large portion (some in excess of 90%) of their genome with other species and as such helping out a fellow animal would preserve those genes.
I may very well have misunderstood some fundamentals, but feel free to enlighten me if I have.
